I want to thank you so much for visiting my blog. In this post we will be discussing ingrown hairs and how you should treat them at home. My name is Emani Mone and I am an esthetician and owner of skincare and cosmetic brand Beauty Strike. Beauty Strike was created from the thought and urge to create a healthy and vegan friendly brand thats also beautiful and has striking bold colors. Beauty and skin care is in my DNA with my late grandmother going to cosmotology school and my mother being a Pink Cadillac winning Mary Kay director. Read the rest of this article to get a better understanding of why people like myself suffer from hair bumps and what you can do to prevent or treat them at home.
Ingrown hairs or as many people know them as “hair bumps” are known in the esthetician world as Pseudofolliculitis barbae. Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a condition on the skin that causes the hair to not penetrate the skin and come to the surface. Most people that suffer from Ingrown hairs notice a clear film or layer on top of the hair which is a build up of soft Keratin which the skin is made up of. To rid yourself of the build up of soft keratin I recommend exfoliating with a ganular scrub at least twice a week and hydrating your skin everyday with essential oils like grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, sunflower seed oil and rosehip oil. Also dry brushing maybe something that stimulates your folicles and helps circulate bloodflow. Dry brushing is the same the same method of exfoliating with a brush but without using water.
But wait, why do I get hair bumps in the first place? As i stated in the previous paragraph ingrown hairs are caused because the hair folicle cannot pentrate the skin properly. Hair that normally grows straight will rarley experience ingrown hairs because the hair is piercing throught the skin. Curly hair on the other hand, often gets ingrown hairs because of the hair growth pattern because it does not grow straight up to pierce the skin; a build up of soft keratin layers ontop of the hair.
Ways to lower your chances of ingrown hairs
- After hair removal do not take a hot shower for at least 24-48 hours
- Avoid the gym for 24-48 hours after removing hair
- Avoid any tight clothes around the area you just removed hair
- Exfoliate using a granular scrub on body parts other than the face to decrease the buildup of skin. If granular exfoliation does not work consult with an esthetician or dermatologist about receiving chemical exfoliation where the ingrowns occur.
- Stay hydrated drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily
- Stay moisturized, make sure you are hydrating your skin internally and externally.
- Avoid doing bathroom surgery on your ingrowns the more you try to get them out without achieving the goal can cause post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is a fancy phrase for a scar after you mess with something on your body.
- Experiencing a rate of high ingrowns? Avoid shaving try waxing or laser hair removal. I’ve had laser hair removal done and experienced no hair bumps or experienced a longer wait time before I saw a hair bump after the fact.
